3 Astonishing Facts about Trees
It's estimated that there are over 3 trillion trees on Earth. While this might make it seem like we have plenty of trees to spare, we really do need to be surrounded by trees for our planet to remain healthy. Trees do the crucial jobs of providing oxygen, preserving soil, supporting wildlife, and helping to slow climate change by removing carbon dioxide from the air. At BP Tree Services, we truly appreciate trees and make it our goal to keep trees healthy. But in some cases, big trees do pose safety hazards. When a dying or damaged big tree is looming over your property, it'll be best to have our local arborists remove it so that it doesn't come crashing down on its own. Here are three fascinating facts about trees.
Thirsty Sequoias
In California, we're lucky to be close to some majestic green giants. Giant sequoias can grow to over 300 feet tall and have a thirst to match their size. One giant sequoia may drink up to 500 gallons of water per day.
Communicating through Chemicals
When some trees, such as willows, are under insect attack, they are known to emit chemicals that seemingly warn other trees of the attackers. Other willows will then start to produce more tannin, which makes it harder for insects to eat their leaves.
Ancient Bristlecone Pines
In 2013, researchers announced they'd discovered a living bristlecone pine that was 5,062 years old. This gave it the title of oldest known individual tree (some clonal trees are known to live much longer), surpassing the former title-holder which was another bristlecone pine, located in California, and aged 4,848. Both of these trees were well-established when woolly mammoths were roaming the earth. Mammoths died out a mere 4,000 years ago.
