Tree Services FAQ
Tree services is undoubtedly a specialized industry, so it is understandable that you'd have questions if you believe you have a need for such. At BP Tree Services we're committed to providing honest information about what we do and how we do it. Please read through these frequently asked questions about tree services and if you have any additional concerns or questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.
How often do my trees need to be pruned?
This heavily depends on species and location. Most deciduous trees need a detailed clean out every 3-5 years. However, some trees, such as Fruitless Mulberry, need annual pruning. Regular maintenance is important not only because of aesthetics, but also safety. Branches grow heavy and eventually can fail, trees grow towards power lines and into structures. The best plan is to be proactive and keep your tree healthy.
When is the best time to prune my tree?
Again, this heavily depends on species and location. Flowering trees are best pruned after they bloom. Fruit trees are typically done around February. Schedule an estimate and an arborist will give you specific advice for your tree.
My tree is in an area of limited access. Can it still be serviced?
Yes, our highly trained professionals work in tight spaces, over structures and tile roofs regularly.
My tree is clearly declining. Can I save it?
We will send an arborist out to assess the tree and give their recommendation. It is possible to revitalize a tree that is stressed, but must be handled on a case by case basis.
What is a certified arborist?
Anyone who studies and works with trees can call themselves an arborist. What sets a tree service professional apart from the rest is an ISA certification. The International Society Of Arboriculture will only issue a certificate after 3 years of study and a rigorous examination process. Arborist must retest every 3 years to keep a current ISA certification.
Do you use spikes to climb the trees?
Our staff is highly trained and will avoid using spikes on trees we are pruning when possible. We will use an aerial lift or free climb most of the time. Some instances may require the use of spikes for safety. Spikes may be used if we are removing a tree.
Are you insured?
Yes, we are fully licensed, bonded and insured. Please ask your estimator for a current copy of proof of insurance for your records.
What is drilling and nitrating?
When stump grinding is not elected, we may use a product called potassium nitrate to apply into drilled out pockets on your remaining stump. This aids in decomposition of the stump. This is not a guaranteed result, some species (specifically Cottonwood and Liquid Amber trees) are resilient to both salt applications and potassium nitrate and may sucker back if not grinded out fully.
Why are all the Redwoods and Oaks dying here in Sacramento?
This is a combined result of the drought and pests. You may have heard of bore beetles? Our trees are having a hard time with the water reduction and this stresses the tree. It is no longer able to circulate sugars and carbohydrates which fight off pest invasions and speed up healing of wounds.
How often should I fertilize my tree?
Most well established trees don't require fertilizer, just good sun and water. Young trees and stressed trees may require fertilization, ask an arborist for a specific recommendation.
